The Neighborhood

pastedgraphic-4_textmediumThe Mattoon Street area offers a variety of housing: condominiums, single-family, two-family, three-family homes, and apartments. Most are attached brick townhouses built in the 1870s and 1880s, but some are detached wood-frame houses. Small yards are big enough for intimate gardens and allow more time for activities other than mowing and raking. The century-old houses contain large, spacious rooms which lend themselves to decorating tastes ranging from Victorian to traditional to modern.

The Mattoon Street Association, a volunteer neighborhood group, helps maintain the quality of the area. It contracts for sidewalk snow removal and spring/autumn street cleaning. Each September, it hosts the two-day Mattoon Street Arts Festival.
